Civil
Air Patrol is a nonprofit, humanitarian corporation established
in 1941 and chartered by Congress in 1946. It is also the official
auxiliary of the United States Air Force. Public Law 476 established
Civil Air Patrol's objects and purposes as follows: "Provide an
organization to encourage and aid American citizens in the
contribution of their efforts, services, and resources in the
development of aviation and in the maintenance of air supremacy, and
to encourage and develop by example the voluntary contribution of
private citizens to the public welfare. Provide aviation education
and training especially to its senior and cadet members; to
encourage and foster civil aviation in local communities and to
provide an organization of private citizens with adequate facilities
to assist in meeting local and national emergencies." CAP
accomplishes its aerospace education mission in a variety of ways,
including both an internal and external program as well as
sponsorship of the National Congress on Aviation and Space Education
(NCASE).
CAP can be a major contributor to our country’s critical Homeland
Security efforts. Our members have excellent air/ground observation
and communications assets at their disposal. CAP can provide aerial
reconnaissance, photography, radiological monitoring, disaster and
damage assessment, and much, much more. Congress gave CAP its
original coastal patrol charter during WWII, and we are ready to
step forward to assist our nation again.
Civil Air Patrol membership offers a lot of great
benefits. Not the least is getting to meet some really fine people. And
that's really the first step to joining the CAP in California.
We recommend that you find a unit in your area, and
drop in for a visit. Use the Units program to
find closest CAP unit in or around Los Angeles County.
You might want to visit more than one local unit, as individual squadrons
tend to have their own personalities. For example, one cadet squadron
might emphasize drill while another might focus on aerospace education.
Each unit will tailor its program to meet the needs of the members as well
as best utilize the resources available in terms of facilities and members.
One thing to keep in mind is that there are three types of squadrons
in CAP:
-
Cadet Squadrons - Tailored
mainly for the youth program, with adults helping to run the youth program
. Ideal for young men and women ages 12-20 who would like to be of service
to their community, state, and nation. Group 1 currently has 6 cadet
squadrons: sq 3, sq 15, sq 63, sq 107, sq 137, and sq 138
- Senior Squadrons - Mission
oriented with a program for adults who
are not cadets ages 18+. Group 1 currently has 3 senior squadrons: sq 35,
sq 128, sq 129
- Composite Squadrons - These units
feature separate programs for youth and adults. Group 1 currently has three composite
squadrons: sq 21, sq 61, sq 64
If you can't find a unit in your area,
contact the webmaster stating
what you are looking for, and he'll do his best to make a good suggestion
for you, and even arrange an appointment to visit if you like!
